SNEAK PEAK: Mountainfilm Adventure Programming

Telluride, Colorado (April 4, 2024) 

Mountainfilm is excited to announce some of this year’s adventure programs that will be featured during the festival. Founded in 1979 as a climbing and mountaineering film festival, over the years the festival has remained true to its roots by offering a wide range of programming that always includes adventure that is steep and deep.

Mountainfilm is thrilled with this year’s lineup, which includes the Colorado premiere of feature-length adventure film, Ashima. The film features the young climbing prodigy, Ashima Shiraishi. The film follows Shiraishi as she travels to South Africa to try to become the youngest person in the world to climb a V14-graded boulder problem. Ashima is a love letter not only to climbing, but to immigrant parents and the realization of the American Dream. Shiraishi will be in attendance at the festival, along with her mentor and one of the most influential rock climbers of all time, Chris Sharma. 

Ashima is the first feature film directed by Japanese-American filmmaker Kenji Tsukamoto, who found a kindred spirit in Shiraishi. “I can't think of a more beautiful setting than Mountainfilm for people to experience our film,” Tsukamoto said. “A lot of people in the outdoor community know of Ashima, or have at least seen a clip of her climbing. I'm excited for audiences to be able to peek into her life, to better understand her experiences not only as a climber, but as a teenager and a daughter of immigrants.”

Mountainfilm’s shorts programs are always sprinkled with epic adventure films. This year the Dirt & Rock, Water & Ice, Changemakers and Local Legends & Steep Thrills programs are sure to be crowd-pleasers for our adventure seekers. 

For those hoping to get outside and get active during this year’s festival The North Face is again hosting the Free Range programs. Festival-goers can go on a wide variety of activities ranging from hiking with Erika Flowers and Jim Morrison, hitting the climbing wall with Chantel Astorga and Conrad Anker, or enjoying Happy Hour chats with athletes and climate experts from around the world. 

Festival Director Suzan Beraza expressed, “We are thrilled to again be honoring Mountainfilm’s roots by showcasing incredible adventure films and programs that celebrate the beauty and diversity of the outdoors. This year we have some epic features, shorts programs, and plenty of experiences tailored to the outdoor enthusiast. And what could be more perfect than spending a long weekend in Telluride, undeniably one of the most beautiful destinations in the world!”
