Matt Mikkelsen

Matt Mikkelson is a sound recordist, audio engineer and documentary filmmaker. He worked as a sound designer and producer on two award-winning documentaries, but he prefers to devote most of his professional career to observing, recording, researching and preserving natural soundscapes. Mikkelsen is the owner of Hayloft Audio and the co-founder of Spruce Tone Films. He’s the co-director of Being Hear (Mountainfilm 2017), Water Flows Together and Venture Out (both Mountainfilm 2020). His clients include Skywalker Sound, Emergence Magazine, Apple and Amazon, and his work has been featured on NPR’s All Things Considered, New York Times Op-Docs, National Geographic and CBS Mornings. Mikkelsen also serves as the executive director of Wilderness Quiet Parks for Quiet Parks International. Most recently is co-directed Usugilix Awakun (Mountainfilm 2024).
